Background
StellarGRE was one of the projects that I worked on at System Plus.
It is a GRE preparation platform that guarantees up to 15-points score improvement to its user base.
The target audience for this project is students preparing for the GRE.
My Role
UI/UX designer
Responsibilities
- High-fidelity mockups
- High-fidelity prototyping
- Iterating on designs
Problem
There are already products in the market with similar offering.
Goal
To design a GRE vocabulary app and its associated admin panel whose user experience is better than the competitors.
Framework Used
The framework used for this project was the double diamond.
Research
Most of the competitors' products had one vocabulary word on a flashcard (with its definition). So if there were multiple words with similar or same meaning, the user had to keep track of them their selves.
We decided to resolve this problem in our product by introducing semantic clusters. A semantic cluster is a collection of five words with the same meaning. So instead of having one word per card, there will be a semantic cluster on the card. This way, it will be easier for users to remember all the words with similar meanings.
Visual Sitemap
Since the app’s functionality was simple, its sitemap was very straightforward.

Admin Panel
The main purpose of the admin panel was to create decks. A deck contained multiple semantic clusters with their definitions.

Other than adding decks, the admin could also see the students’ information and export it.

Mobile App
The Decks
Students can sign up easily and start learning. The main interface contained several decks with 25 semantic clusters each. Each deck would have:
- A progress bar that showed how many clusters have been mastered.
- A “Let’s/Continue Practice” button to open the deck.
- A reset button that will reset the deck to its original state by turning the progress to zero.
In the settings, there’s also an option of resetting all the decks simultaneously.

The Semantic Clusters
Once the student opens a deck he will see the semantic cluster flashcards. On each card the user could take either of the following actions:
- Tap: to see the definition.
- Swipe Right: if they have memorized the cluster.
- Swipe Left: this will push the card at the end of the deck and it will keep on appearing until the user masters it.

Quizzes
Users can take as many quizzes as they want. A quiz will be made from all the completed decks.

The hi-fi prototype demonstrates the onboarding flow, the learning flow, quizzes and resetting all decks flow.
Impact
The Stellar GRE has been a success among its peers and it is supported by these stats.

What I learned?
During this project, I learned that if there is a simple solution to a problem, go for that. There’s no need to bring in unnecessary complexity.
What’s next?
Make improvements in the app through user and peer feedback.
